KISHIN SHINOYAMA "Silk Road #2 Korea" Photo Book "Silk Road, Vol. 1: Korea." Kishin SHINOYAMA, photographer. Japan: Shueisha, 1982, First Edition, OOP, HB, dj, decorative case, 35 cm x 27 cm, approx. 250 pp, single and double page color reproductions. Condition: Excellent. Comments: The second volume from an eight volume series. A monumental achievement, the eight volumes as a whole present an awe-inspiring collection of images along the thousands of miles of the ancient silk road in the present day from Japan to Italy. Heavy oversized books, yet one still gets the impression that the books are still barely large enough to hold Shinoyama's grand visions. Each book is a series of impeccably sequenced, photo-essays of people and places paying special attention to extreme landscapes, places of worship and especially the character and lifestyles of the residents. Far more than travelogues, both artistically and historically amazing. As usual with the greatest of Japanese photographers, the cinematic sequencing is as artistic as the images themselves. The full and double page bleeds are printed in Shinoyama's preferred saturated deep color that leaps off the page. At the end of each book is a generous amount of text but it is in Japanese, and a full fold-out four page map of the entire journey and all of the places visited. A wonderful read more
