The coin captures the kowhai in full bloom, providing a beautiful accompaniment to the image of the New Zealand kiwi. Like the kiwi, the kowai flower has been part of New Zealand’s national identity, and both are depicted on coin's reverse. On obverse the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2012 year-date. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY Native to New Zealand, the kowhai (which means ‘yellow’ in Maori) is famous for its spectacular golden flowers, whose blooming signals the arrival of spring. The kiwi is a nocturnal, flightless bird – leading a largely invisible life compared with the kowhai flower. The kiwi is now an endangered species, the victim of mammalian predators and habitat modification and loss.
