This Klikitat Native American Basket from Washington State is made from cedar and spruce bark. The Klikitat baskets were made tall and narrow for traveling on horses. The finish around the top of the basket is a design for a pack basket. Basket is 9 in tall x 8 in in diameter at the top. From the "Legend of the Klikitat Basket" (in Shackelford 1900) "She began the weave, and after many, many toilsome days a basket was produced. She carried it to the lake and dipped it full of water, but her heart was stricken with grief when it leaked, and the Shade said to her: "It will not do, weave again - a tight basket with a pattern on it." She sat by the waterside in despair, and as she looked down in the clear depths of the beautiful lake, the pattern was revealed to her. I grew up in Washington State and my father would take us to Marry Hill Museam overlooking the Columbia River when I was young. T was always only one thing I wanted to see over and over again. The incredible collection of Klikitat baskets. This is an incredible example of Klikitat artistry.
