Custom San Mai Damascus Lock back KnifeThis is a Premium knife Damascus for knife finishing and custom handling. Great foundation for a high end folder.The blade is made of hardened San Mai stainless Damascus with stainless bolster and brass frame.Over all length open is 6 1/2"Closed is 3 1/2"2mm thick blade and sharpened.Excellent project for the custom maker.Also known as VG10, 70 layers. Handle is DIY. Looks great with mammoth, tooth or burls bring the highest resell value. If you do file work on the blade the blades can be sanded down and the grain regained with ferric acid. A 50/50 solution of ferric acid and water dipped for 15 minutes will bring up a deep contrast of grain. Murric or Ferric acid is sold at Radio Shack as etching solution.San Mai is a stainless Damascus and generally refers to knives with the hard steel hagane forming the blade's edge and the iron/stainless forming a jacket on both sides. In stainless versions, this offers a practical and visible advantage of a superb cutting edge of modern knife steel with a corrosion resistant exterior. In professional kitchens, the edge is kept free of corrosion because knives are generally sharpened on a daily basis. We use San Mai steel on several of our damascus folders and sport knives like the SC Drop point and have had great reports over the years.Business Opportunity and ProfitabilityWe have hundreds of small businesses putting custom handles and reselling our blades and making a good income. I'm often asked where the best place to resell our finished blades is. I was in Alaska recently and two vendors at a local craft show had our blades on display as well as a local merchant. Our blades are well recognized worldwide and highly sought after; The local crafter makes his own niche with our blades. Surprisingly Gun and Knife shows are not the #1 venue but craft shows that draw a high female population is #1. The reason why is woman buy knives for men better than men buying for themselves. The next venue is hunting and fishing outfitters and taxidermy. The next questioned I'm asked is what makes a knife more sellable? #1 is exotic handle material. Many knife makers starting off will use oak or walnut as a handle. While it's cheap it's also plain and usually undesirable. Antler, buffalo and bone are great standards to start with. In woods use a stabilized burl like California Buck eye, Amboyna, and Rosewood Burl. The other things you can do to and to add value and resell ability is your name on the blade, you have a jeweler or laser engraver do that for you, mosaic pins if available, file work on the blade, spacers and an attractive sheath. Lastly every knife maker see his flaws more than anyone else, sometimes the hardest sell is the maker. Find your niche and go with that. I don't like velvet Elvis paintings but they sell.
