Up for auction is the above pictured Knights of Pythias. It is a representative example of the Knights of Pythias society or lodge sword. The order of The Knights of Pythias is a great international Fraternity which was founded in Washington D.C. in 1864, by Justus Rathbone. The sword displays the letters UR which stands for uniformed ranks, which was a militant faction of the Knights of Pythias which disbanded (believed in the 1950's). On the reverse side of the crossguard is the letters "FCB" which stands for Friendship, Charity and Benevolence. This sword is extremely ornate and not intended for combat. This particular sword is from the 1890's. The sword measures 37 1/4 inches overall and the blade is 29" inches long. This sword is in nice condition and is very collectible. This sword is a representative example of the Knights of Pythias society or lodge sword. The order of The Knights of Pythias is a great international Fraternity which was founded in Washington D.C. in 1864, by Justus Rathbone. The most distinctive feature on this sword is the "Knights Head" pommel with the lion resting or guarding the crest. The chain is found on the visor to the phoenix bird on the cross-guard finial.
