is a spectacular commemorative porcelain plate issued by Knowles Taylor & Knowles, of East Liverpool OH. Issued circa 1898-99, it honors Admiral George Dewey, hero of the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War of 1898. Plate measures 8 1/8 inches in diameter with a high, irregularly scalloped rim. Deep blue border (1 ½ inches wide) is overlaid with ornate gilt decorative flourishes (combination of screened and hand-applied motifs) and concentric striped gilt frame around a multicolor transfer of the Admiral's bust on a cream semi-vitreous porcelain ground. Structurally, the piece is near pristine--no chips, flakes, cracks or other detractions. Mild glaze crazing apparent in the cream ground area and on the back side. Some wear to the rim gilting. In the portrait area, t's a hair-width scratch extending into the background area from under Dewey's right ear and a similar linear scratch in the tunic below and to the right of his chin, with a few tiny, speck-like scratches about the tunic area overall. A small glaze pop in the blue border at about 9:00, as made. Backside carries a green KTK mark with bird standing on laurel branch enclosed by a circular border and crest above. I have not seen a nicer example of this desirable commemorative plate. Winner pays $4.05 Priority shipping plus insurance, required on this piece, within read more
