Kober *** Late 1880s' Riverboats --- the Far West of 1870 News of Custer's Defeat at the Little Big Horn Cachet . . . and Only 27 Made ABOUT THIS COVERThe feature stamp on this individually hand drawn and hand painted marvel of an FDC by the supremely gifted artist, Art Kober, is the PO' s 1996 Historic Riverboats . . . the Far West Riverbaot of 1870 stamp, Scott # 3093.About the inspiration for the feature stamps : this stamp is part of a set of 5 riverboat stamps which were released in the pane of 20 format. The stamps, designed by New York stamp artist, Dean Ellis, focused on 5 different riverboats that were built in the last half of the 1800s, and each "steamer" played a distinct role in the history of transportation in America, as my next paragraph will most definitely make clear.About the Riverboat, the Far West : this historic boat, which was built in 1870 and which was operational until 1883, was under contract with the U.S. Army to help transport bring supplies . . . primarily food, clothing, and weaponry . . . to military forts. The Far West is most noted, in the annals of American history, for transporting the survivors of General George Armstrong Custer's 7th Calvary back from southern Montana after the Battle of the Little Big Horn ( October 25, 1876 ) . back to the Dakota Territory, which was the home to General Custer'
