Well kept Koken Barber Chair; porcelin; back reclines; cast iron foot rest is attached, it has a hole in the padding as shown in the picture; the chair swivels and goes up and down; has small tray that can be pulled out. Has been kept in the house, not weatd. Barber chairs have been used in the United States since barbershops started accepting customers for haircuts. In the Civil War era, the chairs were not adjustable, but had upholstered backs. The footrest was like a separate footstool and were customarily used to shine shoes. Ernest E. Koken, who sold decorated shaving mugs and hair-care supplies to barbershops, patented his first reclining barber chair in 1881. By 1900, Koken had designed and patented a hydraulically operated chair. Thousands were sold. Most of the chairs made before 1900 were oak, maple or black walnut. Metal trim was used during the first decades of the 1900s. Porcelain-finished chairs were not popular until after 1917. Today, old wooden barber chairs and the ornate metal-trimmed chairs are refinished and used in homes or as showpieces in hair-styling shops.
