Fine Korean Duck shape stoneware vessel from the Three Kingdoms Period, size 18 centimeters long, 14,5 centimeters high and a weight of 331 grams . Excellent condition.
The Three Kingdoms Period of Korea featured the three rival kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla, which dominated the Korean Peninsula and parts of Manchuria for much of the 1st millennium C.E. . The Three Kingdoms period in Korea extends from the first century B.C.E. (specifically 57 B.C.E. ) until Silla's triumph over Goguryeo in 668, marking the beginning of the North and South States period of Unified Silla in the South and Balhae in the North. In Korea, ducks are symbols of prosperity andfertility. Vessels like this were used in rituals andceremonies. Duck-shaped vessels are known to have originated from Kaya (the birds are plentiful in the Nakdong region there). Kaya was a loosely bound confederation of states, situated in the southern part of the Korean peninsula, during the Three Kingdoms period (about AD 300-668). This tradition of using animal shapes as ritual vessels continued in Korea, even during the Choson dynasty (1392-1910), when animal-shaped vessels were produced in white porcelain. Ancient Koreans believed birds to be messengers to the spirit world because they could travel over land and water and through the sky. In some villages, figures of birds can still be seen on the top of tall wooden poles, recalling their earlier importance. Because they mate for life, ducks were especially favored by Koreans. These vessels were made in a lot of different duck shapes illustrated in picture 9 with a collection from the National Museaum of Korea.
