Rare kuk navy photo to an NCO on the SMS Novara, this was Admiral Horthy's ship in the First World War. The fast modern, light cruiser was involved in many famous actions in W.W.I. The photo measures 3.5 x 6 inches and is in excellent condition, Pola photo maker to the front and back, hand in scripted remembrance to the back with NCOs name, classic naval photo and to a very famous ship, $5.00 post. The main armament of the Novara light cruiser were 10 cm cannons and torpedo tubes, the armor was light. Speed of the ships was 27 knots, quite fast for the time. Together with Tatra class torpedo boats they were ideally suited for naval warfare of the Adriatic. Numerous fast raids on Italian ports were undertaken. The most spectacular action was the successful attack of Novara, Helgoland and Saida on the Otranto Allied naval blockade on May 15, 1917. After the war the ships were given to the victorious Entente Powers: France incorporated Novara under the name Thionville into its fleet (scrapped in 1942).
