He was a pupil of Utagawa Kunisada I and he signed much of his early work "Baidō Kunimasa â...¢." He took the name Kunisada after marrying his master's eldest daughter in 1846. He changed his name once more following his master's death, to Toyokuni â...¢ . However, since t were three artists called Toyokuni before him, Kunisada â...¡ is now often known as Toyokuni IV. Most of his artworks were created between 1850 and the early Meiji era and he painted many portraits of beauties and actors.Murasaki Shikibu Genji Karuta Series #40 out of 54 titled Â"MinoriÂ" was depicted in the Yakusya-e style (portraits of actors). Utagawa Kunisada used another artistÂ's name as Kouchourou (1827 - ) and he created elegant art pieces based on the Japanese classics.
