Kweichow 1928 Auto Dollar China Year 17 . AR Dollar (25.3 grams, Kweichow mint.
Original with documentation. Only 648 were struck. One side features the image of a touring car of the period with Chinese characters reading "Made in the Kweichow Government" above, and the denomination "Seven Maos and Two Candareens" below The reverse shows a poppy flower, with characters for "Kweichow Silver Coin" and at the top "Seventeenth Year of the Republic of China" (i.e. 1928) with "One Yuan" below. The story of this coin: On the establishment of the Republic of China the country had few roads. By 1921 only about a thousand miles of roads capable of motorized traffic had been constructed for the whole nation. by 1926, the most famous builder of roads was the military governor of Kweichow Province and powerful warlord, Chow Hsi-Chen. Upon completing his road project General Chow announced a new commemorative coin. It would bear a likeness of his famous automobile, one of very few imported into the country. He also wanted the coin to have his likeness, but his soothsayers and Feng Shui experts predicted his life would be in jeopardy should his likeness appear. The warlord insisted that at least his name be marked on the coin. A commemorative was then designed with his name, Chow Hsi-Chen, in Chinese characters hidden in the blades of grass below the automobile. The characters can be seen when the coin is held so that the front of the automobile is pointing straight up. His advisers were not happy with this arrangement. The next year whilst leading his troops in his automobile, he happened to move ahead of his infantry by a few kilometers and was ambushed by rebel troops from another warlord's province. He attempted to escape by getting out of his car, but met his death lying on the grass verge bordering the roadway. This was the first coin to depict an automobile, and for fifty years the only coin to do so. Sorry, no "less than 10" feedback bidders. DOCUMENTATION:This coin is from my Grandfather's estate and comes with INSAB documentation. INSAB was the very first third-party grading service, predating ANACS. This company began authenticating coins in 1976 and initiated grading services in December of that year. The INSAB certification (which is a sealed picture of the coin that has been assigned a number) will be included with this coin.
