ANTIQUE SAFETY DEPOSIT LOCKS SALESMAN DISPLAY? - LL BATES & CO., BOSTON You are bidding on possibly a salesman sample display of six safety deposit locks - from the L.L. (Loring L.) Bates & Company of Boston Massachusetts. They are mounted on a board with hooks for the corresponding keys. The locks are numbered 18 1/2, 25, 18, 17 1/2, 17 & 19 - sizes I presume. The keys are also marked with the company name and these numbers. There are master keys that are used first to allow the lock to be opened, then the numbered key is inserted to open the latches - quite an ingenious design. The master key would be used by the vault custodian and the other key by the owner of the box. The latches are marked with two patent dates - Feb. 29th 1876 (US Pat. No. 174,182) & Aug. 17th 1886 (US Pat. No. 347,554). The number 17 lock requires 3 keys to be opened, the master then the two keys numbered 1 & 2...interesting this takes 3 keys. This is the same size as the 17 1/2 lock but is thicker, maybe to account for a varied mechanism inside. The board they are mounted on is 17" long and 4 1/2" wide. It has a wooden box with a felt lining that it fits into. The box is missing one of the two little hooks used to secure the top. There are no markings on the box - only on the keys and the locks.
