LOT # 224 Detailed Photos Estate Road Show L224 RARE FRAMED c1750 HAND COLORED COPPER PLATE MAP ANC GAUL MATTHIAS SEUTTER Item Description We are delighted to present this RARE Hand Colored c.1750s Copper Plate Map of Ancient Gaul by German Cartographer and Engraver Matthias (Matthew) Seutter. This professionally framed and matted original Antique Map shows the Mediterranean at lower right as well as parts of present-day Northern Italy, France and Belgium. It additionally shows parts of Germany and the Netherlands. This Antique Seutter map has been professionally framed in a heavy embossed matte gold frame with a double bordered inside mat around the document. HISTORY: Georg Matthäus Seutter: German born Matthias Seutter was one of the most renowned European Cartographers of the 18th Century. He began his career as an engraving apprentice for Johann Baptist Homann. In 1707 he started his own cartographic printing company in Augsburg, Germany. Matthias Seutter produced maps, globes (starting in 1710) and atlases (starting in 1728). He became the official Imperial geographer of Charles VI. After his death in 1757, the business was continued by his son Albrecht Karl (1722-1762) and his son-in-laws, Conrad Tobias Lotter and G.B.Probst.
