I am proud to offer this vintage original menu form the La HACIENDA del SOL restaurant in Chicago. Based on the telephone number, MO4-6812, this piece must date from the early to mid-1960's. It looks exactly like Alexander Girard's work for the La Fonda del Sol restaurant in New York City. I don't know whether Girard had anything to do with this, or if it is just a knockoff of his designs. The menu, which measures 15 1/8 inches by 8 5/8 inches(38.5 by 22 cm), is made of heavy card paper in a gold color with sun motifs in ultravivid yellow, orange, and pink with black. The inside features charming semi-abstract naturalistic Mexican-style motifs of fish, birds, flowers, suns, and people in black on orange. The highest-priced item on the menu was the BISTEK A LA PARILLA CON PAPAS, a 16 oz. New York cut sirloin steak with pototoes, salad, and tortillas, all for $5.50 ! Condition is very good, although this is obviously a used menu with some light wear and small faint stains. This is just a wonderful example of Midcentury Modernist graphic design, and I'd love to know if it is actually Girard's work. If you have any information about this piece, I would certainly appreciate it. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions. I will provide prompt answers. |
