My longtime favorite U.S. watch firm is the Elgin National Watch Company , a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Elgin, Illinois (the factory had a National Street address). It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago, and the Elgin factory would become the focal point of the town. Elgin would offer its first watch for sale in 1867, marking the beginning of fierce competition with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame. Bartlett and Currier would later join the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield. I am very pleased to offer for sale this 14kt Solid White Gold ladies Elgin timepiece, looking as pretty today as she did back in 1924 when she left the factory. This finely engraved Octagonal Form timepiece measures 30mm lug tip to lug tip and 24mm in width (26mm with original crown). In inches this works out to be 1-3/16” long by 1” in width, not counting the winding crown. It has been fully serviced by my talented watchmaker David and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The silver, matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – professionally restored to its original status. It features a checkered 60 minute inner track border, black enamel “Exploding” numerals and original Fuseaux-style blue steel hands. Signed ELGIN below the 12. The new old stock crystal is in excellent, clear condition, removed in some photos to minimize glare. The case is a tour-de-force of engraved Art Deco detailing, complete with floral and geometric designs on both the bezel and along the case sides. It is a unique double-hinged design, constructed of 14 Karat Solid White Gold and in excellent PLUS shape. The matching white gold finished winding crown (likely original) is in excellent condition, operating smoothly. Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is clean and without and inscriptions, in excellent shape. Peeking inside I find a 10/0 Size (Grade 447) Seven 7 Jewel movement, signed Elgin, U.S.A. with serial number #26,618,961…dating this watch to 19274as per production records. The inside of the case lid is stamped 10/0 E - P.W.C.CO. – 14K . The “E” stands for Elgin and the P.W.C. Co. stands for the Providence Watch Case Company, making this a fully signed watch. This cleaned, oiled & regulated original beauty winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time . It comes fitted with a new 12mm matte finished leather strap that is especially designed for solid wire lug watches like this. A lovely watch for a lovely lady who wishes to discover her “Flapper” roots, put this gem on and you’ll be doing the Charleston in no time!
