An amazing find from a North Carolina Estate. Suspected to be from the Civil War era or before. Considering its age, condition is remarkable. All of the wood is intact except for a flat corner chip on the left upper front corner's top surface; the area is so old it is stained the same as the other surfaces so it is really not intrusive. All of the delicate and truly complicated inlay is intact except a small area to the right side of the key hole. All of the hinges are in place and working. I suspect t have been hinge upgrades in the past century; I believe the lock is original; t is no key. When the top is opened, t is a red satin quilted panel inside the lid; it is loose but otherwise in excellent condition. First inside is a silver painted tray of many compartments, three still having their original red satin covered lids, one still having its pearl-like bead handle. One small wood compartment divider is missing. Under the tray at the back is an area of compartments for inkwells and pens. The front hinges open to reveal a red velvet (cloth, not paper) writing surface which has been embossed all around the edge likely by cutting the pattern into the velvet. The exterior dimensions of the box, closed, are 5 1/4 inches high, 10 inches wide and 7 3/8 inches deep. jada has shipped literally scores of delicate items around the world with NO breakage.
