My favorite among favorite U.S. watch firms is the Elgin National Watch Company , a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago in Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago. By 1867 the first watch was marketed for sale, retailing for $115 (think of that in today’s prices !) and Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and Daniel Currier of Waltham fame. ’s what I would call a truly “great find” – a ladies 1928 Elgin watch in excellent, untouched original condition - very similar to the Parisienne models issued by Elgin during the same period. That’s right folks, only the leather watch strap is new, the rest of this 14kt White Gold filled watch is a well-preserved time capsule of sorts! This geometrically engraved, Art Deco model is triple-signed for Elgin (case, dial and mechanism) and measures 30mm from lug tip to lug tip and 17mm in width (19mm with original engraved crown). With band attached it will fit a wrist from 5-1/2 inches to close to 7 inches in length. It has just returned from being fully serviced by my watchmaker David, ensuring it runs great and keeps accurate time. The original matte enamel finished dial is in mint condition – untouched since it left the factory. It features a black 60 minute outer track border, raised gold numerals and original gold spade-style metal hands. Signed ELGIN below the 12. The solid glass crystal (carefully removed in some for photos to avoid glare) is in excellent condition with no flaws. The case is a Tour-de-Force of embossed Art Deco detailing, complete with geometric designs and beaded borders on the top and also along the case sides. It is a three-piece case crafted of 14 Karat White Gold Fill and the condition is excellent to mint. The original finely engraved winding crown has plenty of detail that only seeing in person will you appreciate. It is in excellent shape and operates smoothly. Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent condition with no wear or engravings. Peeking inside I find an 18/0 size “Triplex” style seven 7 jewel mechanism signed Elgin, U.S.A with serial number #32,641,439…dating this watch to 1928 as per the on-line Elgin database. The inside of the case lid is stamped Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co., 14K Gold Filled - Illinois Watch Case Co., Elgin . This cleaned, oiled and regulated watch is like new old stock inside and out - winding and setting smoothly while keeping accurate time . Comes fitted with a new dark brown 10mm oil leather strap with matching color buckle (white) that is especially designed for wire lug (solid lug) watches like this. An extremely well-preserved 80+ year old timepiece for the lady who wishes to discover her “Flapper” roots, put this gem on and you’ll be doing the Charleston in no time!
