Lot comprises a 10" x 7 1/2 " plaque with pieces from the Lancaster Bomber JB-659 J-Johnny 97 Squadron. The plane was shot down over Amsterdam in 1944. The plane was designated a war grave and remain in the water outside Amsterdam Habour until 2001 when the Dutch Government need to move it to extend the Habour 2 bodies ,1 Australian and 1 Canadian were recovered but the other members of the crew remained with plane. It was agreed by the British Government that it should be excavated and this was carried out by a Royal Netherlands Salvage Team. The bodies were recovered. The wreckage of the plane was returned to Wicken Fen Museum in Lincolnshire although the fatal flight was from Cambridge. The plaues were paid for by a local busineesman with the intention of raising funds for the Museum and The Royal Air Forces Association ( Market Rasen ) Branch. With the plaque you receive a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Julia Mills the owner of the Wickenby Memorial Museum ( at least she was in 2001 ,not sure if sdhe is now ) and a copy of the article from the Market Rasen Mail from February 14 2001 detailing the history of the flight and the subsequent evacuation.My part in it is simple I lived next door to the local businessman's daughter and started selling some on ebay for him.
