This large (19x20) and spectacular Lancaster County Quaker family sampler features not only a colorful array of distinctive Quaker motifs, but also a visually impacting folk art scene with whimsical sheep on an expansive grassy hill......... that itself is adorned with a charming procession of stylized trees! From the Coloms(McColoms) family of Lancaster County,Pennsylvania, the captivating schoolgirl presentation is highlighted by brilliant yellow silks(in the alphabet ,birds, and baskets),a luscious mauve hued strawberry-acorn border, and is signed in a flourescent green cartouche;"Elmira W. Coloms 1833". Elmira's sampler has such dynamic visual impact and resolution it is sure to turn the heads of onlookers from across a large room. Condition is extremely vibrant, extremely fine, and a couple areas of loss are overshadowed by an overwhelming folk appeal and luminous silken stitchwork. In addition the imagery is furthur animated against the off white linen ground. Conserved on acid free board with a below wholesale reserve, this impressive example of American schoolgirl folk artistry is a sure conversation piece for Quaker collectors.
