There is so much to this lot, almost impossible to do it justice in the description. This really is an amazing group of handwritten letters, diaries and ephemera and all of it belonged to the Landon family of Succasunna New Jersey. In all there are about 150 pieces + in this lot. The two main people that are represented in this family archive is Reverend Thompson Hoadley Landon and his son Lieutenant Colonel Thompson Durland Landon. Both men at one time were in charge of the Bordentown New Jersey Military Institute. /85711/bordentown-military-institute-new-jersey/ The following web site gives an incredible photo of both Reverend Landon and his son and also an historical biography which is well worth the read if you are interested in this group; /the-1852-graduates/landon-thompson-hoadley/ I also found this later photo of Col. Landon /Pictures-Misc/InterestingPicturesDocumentsArticlesofBMI/colonelthomasdlandonarmyoftheunitedstates.html The web site above that gave chronological dates concerning Reverend Landon’s ministry is very important because as you read the letters you will see how everything corresponds to this site. The letters are to both the Reverend and his son from various people. In fact the beginning letters are from Seymour Landon, Reverend Landon’s father. There are also several letters written by Reverend Landon to his son. As far as the diaries are concerned, they all belonged to Thompson Landon Jr. and represent his time while at the Institute. There are several other pieces of ephemera including a wonderful antique album full of religious cards and 30 marriage papers or certificates for different people from 1878-1881. Must have been the marriages the reverend performed. The letters date from 1877-1926 and there are a total of about 120 handwritten letters and almost all of them are several pages long. There are 4 handwritten diaries; 1886, 1889, 1890 and 1891. The letters are a fascinating read. A good portion of them are from Reverend James B. Faulks who was a dear friend of Reverend Landon and the 2 nd pastor of the East Orange Calvary M.E. Church. Rev. Faulks son also attended the Bordentown Institute. The first half of the letters are to the Reverend mostly and then the 2 nd have to his son whose letters consist of quite a few female acquaintances. I did notice that Thompson Jr. was having some moral issues and struggles and at one point his father writes a stern 10 page letter to him addressing the subject. Then there are also several letters written by Thompson Jr. on the Institutes stationery describing academy life. I’ve taken several letters and quoted partial excerpts here and then I will describe the diaries briefly after that… “West Winsted Conn January 13 th , 1878 To My Son, Dear Thompson, I can’t (we have a moral inability which consists in the want of a disposition) tell you anything about the trial. It isn’t worth the paper or ink and time it would take to write it. Will tell you all about it when I see you and have an opportunity so far as my memory will advise. Your dear mother is failing, both mortally and bodily. I shouldn’t wonder if she should be taken away from us before long and would undoubtedly be taken to Heaven. Whenever that may be and whatever it may be, yet undoubtedly better than this cold world, yet I shudder and shiver at the thought of her leaving. I hadn’t been in the house 20 minutes on Sunday, the day I parted with you, when she said, “Seymour, I want to go to home with you” and in a moment of two afterwards she added, “We won’t be parted anymore will we.” Oh! Thompson, I can’t tell you how I felt then and do now whenever I think of those words and what shall I, what can I do. Oh! What a good daughter, what a good sister, what a good wife, what a good mother, what a good preacher’s wife and what a good practical C...
