This Lane cedar "Hope" chest was manufactured on July 11th, 1956 . Originally, it was given to my husband's grandmother as a gift 50 years ago. I refinished it about 20 years ago. We have replaced the lock as was recommended by the consumer product safety folks for child safety reasons (with the original locks, if a child got inside and closed the lid, the child could not get back out!). We ordered the replacement lock and key set free direct from Lane and replaced it so all is well. It has three "picture frames" of molding on the front for decoration: two are beaded, the center one is solid. I just realized our photos don't do the beaded molding justice! The drawer has two oval brass pulls - the felt lining needs to be replaced (or covered up!) and one of the drawer support rails (that you can't see, underneath) has been replaced by my husband. I believe t used to be a shelf connected to the top, but it is not t now and you really can't tell t ever was. I wish I knew what kind of wood the outside is - but I'm not knowledgeable. Could it be cedar, too? Is a cedar chest totally made of cedar? I assume it is just cedar lined, with another wood for the exterior. We have tried to photo the major nicks.
