The Firebird name was borrowed from a series of experimental gas turbine cars built by GM in the 1950s and 60s. The first Firebird was introduced on February 23, 1967. Though it shared many components with the Camaro, the Pontiac designers did their best to make it look like a Pontiac. They gave the new car the famous wide-track look by including wider tires and the distinctive divided grille. And they built on the reputation of the GTO by installing the powerful Pontaic engines in the cars.
