Thanks for bidding on another auction from CAM-Auctions! We appreciate your business. Item Description: Up for bidding is this Lang and Wise Colonial Williamsburg Governor's Palace (#0506009) and Palace Gate (#0506006). One of the finest buildings in the American colonies, the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg was the elegant and imposing residence of seven royal governors and the first two governors of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Governor Edward Nott finally persuaded the General Assembly to authorize construction of the Palace in June 1706. Although work began almost immediately, construction proceeded slowly. The first resident, Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood, had moved into the house by 1716, but the Palace was not completed until 1722. Spotswood oversaw the development of the elaborate gardens and canal, the regal gates with lion and unicorn guardians, the magnificent display of arms in the entrance hall and the elegant appointments of the upper middle room w the governor received petitioners.Subsequent governors added on to the building and grounds, carefully orchestrating the development to represent the power and authority of the English monarch and to instill in the colonists respect for executive power until June 1775, when the last royal governor fled Williamsburg. After Independence was declared, the Palace became the home of the elected governors of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson each lived t before the capital moved to Richmond in 1780. Following the siege of Yorktown in 1781, the Palace served as a hospital until fire destroyed it on December 22 of that year. This building is one in a collection based on the historic restoration at Colonial Williamsburg. It measures approximately 12" tall x 10" wide x 10" deep. Both the palace and the gate come in their original boxes. The palace comes with its internal light and two weather vanes for the very top (one of which is slightly bent at its base--see photo). The gate comes with two straight wall pieces and two curved wall pieces. Both collectibles have been put out for display once and then were repackaged until we photographed them. They have no chips, cracks, or other surface damage. These beautiful collectibles are particularly hard to find pieces of history.Be sure to check our auctions in the coming weeks, as we'll have a variety of Colonial Williamsburg collectibles going up for auction!
