Item Description:

Up for bidding is this Lang and Wise Colonial Williamsburg Courthouse Building (#20480515). The Courthouse was built in the early Georgian T-plan design, a common form for courthouses in Virginia. It served the City of Williamsburg and James City County until 1932. Built on Market Square in 1770, the Courthouse served as the seat of local government with jurisdiction over crimes ranging from petty theft to absence from church. Court sessions also served as occasions for social gatherings. Residents crowded into the courtroom to hear matters of local gossip and witness the unfolding drama. Outside, they watched as convicted offenders were escorted to the stocks, pillory or whippint post.

The location on Duke of Gloucester Street, midway between the college and the Capitol, made the Courthouse a favorite public place. Notices tacked on the doors told of proposed marriages, sales of property, or new laws passed. Voters gatd t to choose representatives for the House of Burgesses. And on July 25, 1776, attorney Benjamin Waller proclaimed the Declaration of Independence from the Courthouse steps to the people of Williamsburg after the news arrived from Philadelphia. How ironic that the steps were imported from England.

This building is one in a collection based on the historic restoration at Colonial Williamsburg. It measures approximately 10" tall x 10.75" wide x 9.75" deep. It comes in its original box with original packaging material. The building is all one piece and includes an electrical cord for lighting (the bulb burnt out when we turned it on to test it, so it needs a new bulb, but we're including the old one for easy sizing). It was put out for display once and then was repackaged until we photographed it. It has no chips, cracks, or other surface damage. This beautiful collectible is an unusual piece of history.
