Wetherburn's Tavern - Lighted Lang and Wise - Colonial Williamsburg"For the LADIES and GENTLEMEN, T will be a BALL, AT Henry Wetherburn's on Tuesday Evening next, the 10th instant, and on every Tuesday during the sitting of the General Assembly." Virginia Gazette , March 5th 1752. Merriment and Conviviality were specialties of the house at Wetherburn's Tavern in Williamsburg. Colonial taverns were the social and political centers of the Virginia colony w prominent politicians like George Washington entertained and drank oaths, addressed the public, attended balls, and even found lodging. Henry Wetherburn's careful room-by-room records of his tavern on Duke of Gloucester Street helped Colonial Williamsburg architects and archaeologists faithfully restore this whitewashed structure. Visitors can see the authentically furnished rooms, and the kitchen yard and vegetable gardens enclosed by picket fences.
