LAPPONIA (name comes from âeoe Lapland Goldâe) was founded by Pekka Anttila in1963. Björn Weckström started to design for the company during the same year. The sculptural forms of Weckström´s gold jewellery come from Finnish Lapland . In many of his early designs Weckström attributed to natural gold nuggets. The company name Lapponia refers to Lapland . In 1964 Weckström´s necklace Flowering Wall was awarded the Grand Prix in the jewellery design competition in honour of Rio de Janeiro´s 400 th anniversary.
Late 60´s Weckström created the series Space Silver, which referred to interest in space and universe. In 1969 Weckström created his first Space Silver collection. In 1972 John Lennon and Yoko Ono were invited to Dick Cavett TV Show. TV cameras were several times zooming the spectacular new silver ring in the finger of Yoko Ono. She had purchased this ring in Gothenburg , Sweden . The ring was Space Silver ring called " Petrified Lake ". In the first Star Wars movie in 1975 Princess Leia was wearing the Space Silver necklace called " Planetary Valleys " In 1971 Lapponia launched the Flame Bronze Collection designed by Weckström. In this series were 8 rings, 7 pendants, 3 bracelets and 4 belts. All these were produced just a short period in the 70´s only. Name Flame Bronze came from the special patina surface of the items. The collection has a dark tone and heavy image. The names of jewellery in this collection had clear military overtone like B52, Pentagon, Starfighter and International Arms Inc. to take some examples. Some of the names had connection to automotive industry like Mustang, General Motors, Pontiac 59 and Buick 49. The three bracelets were called Mauser, Krupp and Maginot. This beautiful modern Lapponia Flame Bronze belt is called Buick 49. The buckle has beautiful amethyst colour patina. The leather is black suede without any flaws. The whole belt and buckle look to be unused in as near mint condition as possible. The buckle is marked Lapponia, . Furthermore t is imprinted FINLAND , BW and FINLAND . The length is adjustable, now 35½ inches or 90 cm and the width is near two inches or 4.8 cm. This Flame Bronze belt a fine example of very desirable Finnish modern jewellery. It is absolutely an appreciated gift to any lady. This special piece of Nordic Design will be noticed anyw the owner will use it. I describe the items to the best of my ability and always describe all the flaws in verbal description and with as many photographs as needed.
