Lovely large old Chinese wooden box from the 1800's. 14 1/4" square by 7 1/2" tall, these containers were used for storage, often for dried foods. This one has a very pleasing shape, well balanced proportions and lovely aged remnants of red lacquer paint. Red lacquer was painted on wooden objects extensively in China starting about 7000 years ago ( made using tree resins and the sticky scarlet secretions from the lac insects) - When it dried, the lacquer not only looked beautiful but was resistant to damage by water, acid or abrasion. The lacquer fades from red to a pinkish red color over time when exposed to sunlight. Soft mole skin pads on the bottom corners. A handsome antique box perfect to store all sorts of treasures ~ Balthazara - fine NO RESERVE auctions -
