This is an exceedingly eye-catching large blue/white porcelain planter produced by Maddock's Lamberton Works in Trenton, NJ. Operating between 1888 and 1923, the Company produced "sanitary wares" and high quality china for domestic and commercial use. Featuring large bold cobalt and lighter blue peonies on a bright white ground, this jardiniere measures about 9 inches high by 10 inches wide. If you look at the photos you can see the size in comparison to a full-size teapot. In a way, it's highly organic all-over design and striking capture some of the best elements of great transferware and/or flow blue. While the pattern may camouflage the shape in the photos, the lower portion has a melon shape, and the top edge is patterned and trimmed in gilt. As the photos will hopefully show, the exterior finish is absolutely beautiful and free of dullness or discoloration. The base does show yellowing and crazing, and the piece has apparently done service as a planter - with the telltale crazing/spiderwebs inside. The photo of the interior (which I darkened a bit for contrast) should also show a light hairline in the glaze at the top interior. I believe this is superficial, and certainly doesn't extend through the piece. Anyway - it's a really gorgeous piece, so if I may answer any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail. And in the event the shipping calculator is out-of-whack (as the package will be larger than 12x12, I charge only the actual USPS cost.
