In this auction we have a large 26" antique African tribal art Baule tribe figural wooden carved mask. Now we're not experts but we were able to closely match this design to a few others we found online from the Baule Tribe. This is a larger mask but it has a really great design! While these days most of us are just going to hang these on our walls, back in the day this served a very different purpose. Yes this is a mask, but it doesn't have eye slits, so how would you see out of it? You wouldn't, this type of mask is meant to be worn on top of your head! You'll see a bunch of openings around the base, this is where they would've put a strap and raffia cloth that would dangle down around their body so they could do ceremonial dances and things like that. The main color of the mask is red with black and yellow accents on the eyes, ears, cheeks and forehead. There's also a large blue bird standing on top of this head with yellow legs, beak and a red piece on...keep scrolling there are 20 pictures and more description beneath the photos below!it's head. This mask measures approx. 26" x 8" x 6" and doesn't appear to have any markings on it. There is some but minimal age appropriate wear throughout this piece. This mostly includes some light paint loss, chips and scratches. There is one larger crack on the bottom right side (if you're looking at it) and one larger chip on the top left side, but nothing large enough to damage it structurally. Overall this is still in good condition and is really a great piece. If you like this keep an eye out because we'll have some more great African items going up around the same time. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people, and maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend, during the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means "the child has died." Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves.
