New Large Advent Speakers in excellent condition.High quality vintage classics.I re-foamed the woofers with foams made for Advent. All drivers in excellent working and cosmetic condition. Not that they really neede it, I lightly sanded and oiled the cabinetsto restore the wood grain. These speakers are reknowned for their detail, suprising bass and reproduction of music.Large Advent speakers were manufactured over more than 25 years under various namesand forms. The tweeters are the original "fried egg" dome-cone tweeters on aluminum andmasonite plates. Stereophile included them in its historic list of the 100 greatest audioproducts. From J. Gordon Holt's review of the original Large Advents in Stereophile ( /standloudspeakers/171advent/ ): "Our first reaction was Ho-Hum! They didn't send us. They seemed to have no character at all. But is that bad? Well, no, as a matter of fact. A speaker shouldn't have character. And indeed, the Advents did prove to be about as uncolored as anything we had ever heard. No squawk, honk or hollowness, no papery or metallic flavor from disc surface noise, no flabby mid-bass boom. The extreme low end was very deep, evidently good to at least 35Hz, and the highs were extremely smooth, sweet and detailed. After several weeks of listening, we still hadn't found anything to complain about. We couldn't even find any sonic characteristics to hang adjectives on, in order to try to describe their sound. They were, in fact, the least-colored loudspeakers we have ever heard, and this includes the highest-priced systems currently available. Probably for just that reason, the Advents proved eminently easy to live with, and sounded equally comfortable and natural at low or room-filling listening levels. Dispersion was excellent and so, as a consequence, was the stereo imaging. Driver blending, too, was excellent, and the speakers did an outstanding job of reproducing the front-to-back perspective in stereo and mono program material." Released in 1969, the original Large Advent was one of the most respected loudspeakers of the 1970s. They were known for their incredibly deep bass response, relatively extended high frequency response, and cost-effectiveness. A pair of Large Advents in real walnut cost under $300. The faux-walnut "Utility" version cost just over $200 for the pair./content_276686212740In 1973, Advent released a newer version of the Large Advent Loudspeaker. Called simply the New Large Advent Loudspeaker, it was similar to the original, but with slightly different drivers and a different crossover. The masonite frame of the original woofer was replaced with a metal frame, and the famous "fried egg" tweeters were replaced with similar flush mounted tweeters. I believe the newer tweeters were designed to handle more power.The literature accompanying the New Large Advent Loudspeaker (or New Advent Loudspeaker as it is often called), explains that the newer version was designed to have a more extended high end in response to improvements in recording quality happening in the early 1970s. The basic design (a large two-way with a simple crossover) was maintained.Cosmetically, the New Large Advent is similar to the original but with some noticeable differences. The beveled front on the newer version is more rounded, rather than stepped. And the grille is actually darker on the newer version, kind of a burlap color, rather than off-white. If you look at the driver cut-outs through the grilles, the older cutout is round, the newer rectangular.I liked the older Large Advent Loudspeaker and thought it to be a very good vintage loudspeaker.
