Large OLD Antique American Barbizon Landscape Oil Painting Att. Howard R. Butler (1856-1934) - NO RESERVE - Currently, I am having my "Major Mid-Winter" Fine Art Sale! This sale features two pieces of original art an evening, in separate auctions. Most of the art was done by listed and famous artists. All of the art is being offered (in separate auctions) with .77 opening bids, no reserves and is 100% guaranteed, as described! Description This painting comes from a private collection (San Francisco, California). A good impasto, soft, but deft brushwork and careful attention to the atmosperic conditions are just a few of this painting's qualities. There are many important 19th century American artists that sometimes painted in a similar style. George Inness, Alexander Wyant, Robert Decker and Ralph Blakelock are just a few names that come to mind. Then, there was a painting sold in 2007 by Howard Russell Butler that had similar styled trees and foreground. Adding to the possibility that this painting may have been done by Butle r is part of an old label with the name "Butler" on it. This does not mean that it is the label that Butler used in the 19th century, as I have not seen the label (if any) he used. Thus, being the reason why I am only attributing this painting to Butler . There is inpainting on the lower left corner...a place where a signature may have been located. It is possible to remove the inpainting to see if there is a signature. However, the process is expensive and there is no guarantee that the painting is signed there. If you are unfamiliar with Howard Russell Butler , I would like to share his biography from Wikipedia with you: BIOGRAPHY and REFERENCES: "Howard Russell Butler (March 3, 1856 – 1934) was an American painter and founder of the American Fine Arts Society. Butler also persuaded Andrew Carnegie to fund the construction of Carnegie Lake near Princeton University. Butler also designed a mansion, an astronomy hall and painted a solar eclipse for the U.S. Naval Observatory. Science, Law and Art Butler was born in New York City. He was the son of William Allen Butler, a lawyer and satirist. His early artistic training with William Shannon was complentented by visits to the National Academy of Design, where his parents were both fellows, and the studio of his uncle, William Stanley Haseltine. Butler attended Princeton University and obtained a degree in Science in 1876 and he was invited to stay on for a year as an assistant professor of physics. From 1878 to 1879 he was doing technical illustrations in New York where he knew Thomas Edison. In 1881 he was able to graduate from Columbia University where he had studied law. While he was at Princeton he was an active member of the rowing team despite there being poor facilities. Butler practiced patent law until 1884 when he decided to concentrate entirely on painting. Art and leadership He reapplied himself studying under the elderly Frederic Edwin Church in Mexico before returning to study with J. Carroll Beckwith and George de Forest Brush at the Art Students League in New York. In 1889 Butler was able to find the capital to build the Fine Arts building at 215 West 57th Avenue. This building was to be the home of the Art Students League, the Society of American Artists, the Architectural League of New York and the newly formed American Fine Arts Society which Butler led for its first 17 years.
