LARGE A++ ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN DOUBLE-MIHRAB PRAYER CARPET

LARGE ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN KAZAK DOUBLE MIHRAB PRAYER CARPET, Southern Transcaucasia, end of the 19th century (1890-1900), and it comes in excellent, near-mint, overall condition for the collector or decorator. The exact size is: 5'-4" x 8'-11" (163 x 272 cm). This decorative Kazak antique Caucasian collector's carpet displays a large central ivory box medallion with reciprocally opposing arched prayer mihrabs on a brilliant madder red field containing a wide assortment of geometric filler devices including three human figures (see photos # 10 and 11). The weaver chose to frame her bold composition with a rarely seen yellow ground "leaf-and-calyx" border surround. This splendid antique weaving possesses only 100% natural, plant-derived dyes and was woven on natural ivory wool warps and wool wefts dyed red. The pile condition is most pristine (see photo # 12) with just a couple of very minor lower, but NOT worn, areas and one very small restored fold line. Otherwise it is in near-mint, high pile condition with the original braided warp end finish at the top and the original lower end that is sewn back secure to prevent any loss of structure from use (see photo # 11). The side cord over-castings are all original and complete. This lovely old carpet has been professionally cleaned to museum standards and it is now collection ready. A stunningly beautiful antique Caucasian Kazak carpet to observe in person. Photos # 1, 4, and 10 reveal the true color palette. My other nine photos are a bit too dark having been taken outside on a cloudy day. A top quality padding for underneath is highly recommended if this carpet is destined to be used as a decorative floor covering.
