This large size dark blue transfer printed Landing of Lafayette platter, commemorating his arrival at Castle Garden in New York in 1824, is a full 17 inches long and 13 inches wide. It has the James and Ralph Clews circular mark used between 1818 and 1834. There are a couple tiny glaze bubbles at the top, which could be stilt marks, and just a tiny bit of discoloration in that area; also a minor bruise and a tiny flake to the glaze at the edge of the rim. In that same area and in other places on the rim, what may look like hairlines to some are just a line or two from the printed transfer material, from stretching it onto the pottery--a typical occurrence in the production process. Some light utensil marks from use are noted. Although this historical platter presents very well, there is a Y-shaped crack which is not very evident on the front without shining a light directly on it. I doubt it will show in my pictures. The utensil marks are easier to see. Seen on the back, the crack travels most of the way across the bowl and not at all on the rim. Looking at the back it is mostly noticed from the upper right of the bowl part of the platter, traveling diagonally to the lower left. Also, much more fine and harder to see, the shorter part of the "Y" extends to the lower right towards the Clews mark. This platter has neither chips to the pottery nor any hairlines. Use wear and tiny scratches can be seen on the back and there are blue finger marks from the transfer near the Clews mark. White and a kind of orange color spots are flash from the camera. The 7th, 8th and last pictures were taken without flash so a little dark. My items are guaranteed as written. I start almost all my listings at $9.99 regardless of my reserve. Any questions are happily answered--please don't wait until the last hours of the auction. Payment is due within 7 days after the auction. Insurance is included in the handling charge.
