Large antique Italian "Delft style" bowl, Cantagalli

A large, dramatic antique Florentine display bowl, in blue and white “Delft style,” made and marked by the Cantagalli workshop in northern Italy. It is a wide open elliptical bowl with flat bottom and exaggerated wavy rim . It is supported on four feet which take the shape of sea monsters. Its two handles are pairs of intertwined curling snakes. There has been some old damage and some early good-quality restoration work: specifically, one foot has been reattached and the corresponding interior portion of the bowl likewise repaired; parts of one snake handle have been restored ( some discoloration of restored areas); plus some very minor chips here and there from use. Otherwise the condition is very well preserved.
The painted decoration is elaborate and charmingly rendered, all in blue on an off-white ground. Both long sides of the exterior show scenes of the Italian countryside: (1) a group of two men and three women seated together in apparent lively conversation, and (2) a mounted gentleman or noble preceded by a running gonfalonier(?) with a flag or spear. The interior walls are decorated with groups of rocks and leaves around the rim, while the interior bottom shows the walls and towers of an Italian Renaissance town. The underneath of the bowl is marked by the “blue cockerel” of the Cantagalli, with the number 10 (see photo 4 above, inset). This elaborate bowl probably dates from the late 19th century, or right around 1900. A rare and magnificent display piece. Full length 16”, full width 10 1/2”, full height 7 1/2”.
