This ancient jade dragon & man figure could be Dawenkou Culture or Hongshan Culture. Their cultures overlaped, the Hongshan were 4500 - 2200 and the Dawenkou were 4500 - 2500 BC. The Dawenkou carvings I have seen were all a dark jade like material, if not jade in the strictest sense, and they were somewhat simplistic in their carving if not in their motifs. This motif however is not uncommon in Hongshan pieces, though the size is usually much smaller. This was one of several figures I bought several years ago from a Chinese seller who sourced his pieces from around Xian. This is a bit further west than most archaic jades coming out of China. They were all of this dark colored jade and of similair sizes. Many of these totems had man / animal motifs. Some were obviously fertility carvings, and many appear to be funerary carvings. This carving is in excellent condition, heavy and solid, and measures about 7-3/8 x 2-1/4 x 1-3/4 inches. It weighs nearly two pounds.
