Large Art Nouveau Sterling Overlay Trivet Attributed to Alvin c1890-1910
History & Context This well regarded firm was organized in 1886 as the Alvin Manufacturing Company in Irvington, New Jersey by Wm. H. Jamouneau. Alvin manufactured silver flatware, hollowware, novelties and sterling overlay pieces, for which the company is now noted (a silver deposit process they patented in 1886). In 1895 the company was purchased by Joseph Fahys & Co., a watch making firm, and moved to Sag Harbor, Long Island. The company's name was changed to the Alvin Silver Company in 1919. They continued to produce silver flatware, hollowware, dresserware and the now highly sought after silver overlay / deposit articles. Gorham purchased certain assets, including dies and patterns, in 1928. American sterling overlay pieces -- created the best American firms -- are becoming more difficult to acquire as collectors world-wide enthusiastically drive prices up as they compete to build unique, vintage, American collections.
