This is a large format photograph of World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion, bodybuilder, philosopher and author, George Hackenschmidt (Georg Karl Julius Hackenschmidt). The photograph (Ca. 1910's) is mounted on heavy cardstock measuring approximately 7-1/8" X 16-3/8" (18 cm X 41.5 cm). The upper left corner of the mount is broken off, t is a heavy crease at the lower right corner and the corners are rounded. T are some water spots at lower left. All of this is visible in the scan. The photograph, itself, measures approximately 6" X 11-1/4" (15 cm X 28.5 cm) and is in excellent condition. Hackenschmidt's autograph, in brown ink is below the photograph. T is a brief newspaper article on Hackenschmidt pasted to the reverse of the mount. Nicknamed The Russian Lion, although he was actually born in Estonia, Hackenschmidt (1878 - 1968) was the first undisputed heavyweight wrestling champion, earning the title by defeating Tom Jenkins in 1905. He lost the title to Frank Gotch in 1908, in a very controversial match and losing an even more controversial rematch with Gotch in 1911. He went on to become a pioneer in the field of weightlifting and invented the "Hack Squat." He was also the author of several books on physical fitness and philosophy.
