Large Bear Head Effigy Steatite Stone Indian Pipe

This auction is for a large steatite carved bear head effigy pipe. A hefty stone pipe weighing 8 or 9 pounds. Measures about 7.5 inches long, 5 or 6 inches tall. A beautifully sculpted pipe with lots of character. The bear sports a wide, toothy grin which sometimes looks playful, other times menacing. A lovely work of art in very good condition. The stone is a black/gray color with a slight bluish cast. A circular vein of white quartz type stone around the bottom. A polished surface with some old peck marks on top, around the bowl area. A small group of old peck marks around the cheek and above the eye. A few very tiny recent surface scratch marks. Looks like a cross or earing has been pecked below one ear. I've had this one over 20 years, one of the first that I bought at an estate auction in Illinois. I hate to part with it, but the storage room is being converted to a nursery for the little one due in the spring.
