This is a larger-than-usual one-drawer cherry work stand, measuring 31 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 25.5 inches high - at least several inches larger in every dimension than the average.
Even more unusual is the figuring in the cherry of the legs and sides, and to a lesser degree in the top. There is a luminosity, usually associated with curly maple, which is impossible to photograph, but easy to see as you change your angle of view. This curly cherry figure is overlaid with darker lines, running across the grain, and is an affect I have not seen before. Curly cherry is not common ( but almost always less dramatic than the figure in curly maple) but my, admittedly limited, research can turn up no name for this combination of figures. Condition is excellent, having recently been refinished . The finish, as I found it, was older, but not original, and opaque enough to hide some of the fine details. Our staff (actually, thats sort of pretentious - we have one guy out back there doing all the hard work, sniffing all those fumes and getting a little funny in the afternoons, but he does great restoration work, and seems happy) aims to produce a finish that looks like a well-tended, 100-year-old hand-rubbed finish, rather than that over-refinished, glossy look so often seen. We rarely use any stain, so the color you see is the natural wood, just as it was 150 years ago. And the color will deepen and become more rich with time. Our finishes tend to get better and better with age , as the areas that are frequently touched acquire a nice, seemingly century-old, patina.
