This is a genuine fossil from the age of the early Dinosaurs. Jurassic period c180-170 million years old. Really excellent specimen with significant original matrix (natural rock) to the back & sides from where it was originally found. Very big example ~ 90mm across, 30mm deep and heavy. Sharp detailed evolute coiling with a large number of clearly visible ribs that duplicate across the venter. Dactylioceras (superfamily name of Eoderoceratacea). Found in the UK at Whitby, West Yorkshire. An ammonite from the Torcian lower Jurassic. Known locally as "Snake Stones" from the legend that St. Hilda turned all snakes into stones. The name ammonite, from which the scientific term is derived, was inspired by the spiral shape of their fossilised shells. This is a great fossil by any standards and would make a superb addition to any collection.
