Large Early 19th C English Needlework Darning Sampler

A large and most unusual early 19 th Century (c.1810 or so) English Needlework Darning Sampler. The piece is signed E. Canter (may be Canler) and it includes a large basket of flowers in the center with flower sprigs and embellishments on the side. What is most unique about this sampler is its diamond-shaped orientation, with the traditional 'stitched crosses' around the outside perimeter. The basket and the embellishments are Pattern Darning, I believe. The sampler is framed in a period, if not original, wooden frame. Sight size is 13 3/4" square and overall frame size is about 18 ½" square. Overall condition of this sampler is average to good: the colors are very strong, especially in the pattern darning section and the needlework t is complete. The linen backing is not ripped, nor does it have holes, but t is some pulled stitching in one of the 'crosses' at the upper right (the one with the solid red panel). The most serious issue is the staining around 3 sides, especially the 2 sides at the top of the piece. (Note, please, that the staining is a bit darker in real life than in the photos.) The frame is in overall good condition with some gilding loss on the liner and the expected minor bumps/bruises. I have not even thought about taking the sampler out of the frame to see if it could be cleaned: that is a job for a trained professional. Darning Samplers in general are rare items, and with the signature, the unusual diamond-shaped format and the elaborate pattern darning represented in this example, I think the piece is worthy of your consideration even with the staining. Buyer prepays, plus postage (large and bulky, so expect shipping to be in the $20-$35 dollar range, plus the cost of insurance; more for International buyers).
