WELCOME Thanks for visiting! I'm not sure of the origin of this incredible tray, I believe it to be China, but it could be Japan. It is the result of a huge number of hours of work overpainting layers of lacquer to build up densities that can be carved. This box has three discrete layers, yellow overlaid with green, and finally cinnabar red. The tray is shallow, about one inch tall at the rim, and is covered with a deep lid about two additional inches tall. The entire box formed by the sidewalls of the tray and lid, as well as the flat surface of the lid are all carved in intricate floral and organic figures; t are red butterflies on every panel of the side of the lid. The yellow area of the lid is cut with grooved checkerboard squares. The green layer is carved into a circle of butterflies and intricate leaf patterns. The red layer creates the frame for the other artwork, has the large red flower in the center of the lid, and leaves around the flower. The box measures about thirteen inches in "diameter", but as the photos show, is gracefully scalloped in a traditional Asian pattern that is roughly hexagonal. The interior of the tray and lid, and the base of the tray are all black. T are no marks on the tray--it appears as if t might have been marks that were scratched off the inner floor of the tray, but I cannot be sure. The tray is in exceptionally fine condition. T is no damage at all to any of the carvings that I can observe. T is a crack in the lower margin of the lid (3mm), and apart from that the only break in the lacquer I can see is along the seam of the base of the tray, w t is a crack in the lacquer, but all the lacquer is present. to view other great buys in my store: Books D innerware Jewlery Misc Collectibles Painting and prints Pottery and Ceramic s Silver items Vases and planters Add Me To Your Favorite Sellers List!
