Large Ersari Turkoman Zamin Rug Oriental Rug This is an Ersari Turkoman rug, of a group called Zamin, woven byTurkoman refugees in Northern Pakistan, room sized 8-4"x10'. These are woven of hand spun, hand carded, wool colored with vegetable dyes. This is a contemporary rug. The immediate ancestors of the woman who wove this rug moved to Northern Afghanistan c. 1917-23 from Turkmenistan to avoid the Russian Revolution and the resulting Civil War. The Northern Afghanistan Ersari have had a most difficult time during the Afghan Soviet War (1979-89) and the ongoing civil war. We knew a Turkoman elder, now a refugee in Northern Pakistan, who had twice been an exile from his home, in 1918 and in 1984. Oriental Rug Review Antiques and Tribal Rugs is pleased to offer a room sized, hand made, knotted pile, Ersari Turkoman Zamin (earth) Rug, contemporary. This is a dense, heavy (shipping weight 70 lbs.) rug. On the beautiful ivory grounded field is an adaptation of a Northwest Persian "arabesque" design. This is a design motif of intertwining or scrolling vines, tendrils, flowers and branches, all done in natural (vegetable) dyes. On the border is a floral, leaf, vine meander which can also be read as a fragmented arabesque design. We apologize for having to present the rug in our photography as foreshortened. This is a most unusual and beautiful rug. T are lighter and darker areas on the field of this rug. This is abrash . Abrash (Arabic for "dappled," "piebald") is a variegated color effect achieved by using yarns from different dye batches of the same color. Done well, it can be a very pleasing effect, such as on this rug. Below is a description of this production from its originater: "Only vegetable dye stuffs are used: madder root is collected from Northern Afghanistan, many other plant dye sources, roots and flowers, are collected from Afghanistan and some from within Pakistan. For wool we take the finest, largest staple wool, collected at the time of the spring shearing from the high mountain region of central Afghanistan. This raw wool we then bring to Baluchistan, a remote province in the western part of Pakistan w it is washed, hand carded, and handspun by Mogol refugees, a little known ethnic group also from Northern Afghanistan. From the handspun yarn travels to Lahore w our vegetable dying and finishing work is located. The yarn is dyed and then sent out to the various refugee settlements in the northwestern part of Pakistan w the weaving takes place. All weaving, with the exception of very large pieces, takes place in individual family homes. Usually multiple generations of Turkmen women (grandmothers, mothers, and their daughters) weave alongside one another."
