European Atlas by Captain Chauchard dated 1800 Entitled: “A general map of the empire of Germany , Holland , the Netherlands , Switzerland , the Grisons, Italy , Corsica and Sardinia .” Author: Captain Chauchard Printed for: John Stockdale, Piccadilly Printer: T. Gilbert, Salisbury Square Dedicated to: his Kings Most Excellent Majesty Dated: 4th June 1800 Price: Eight Guineas Description: This atlas is made from a large wall map. The folio atlas is of central Europe (65 x 56 cms. 25.5 x 18.5 inches) and consists of an index map, title page, dedication, and 25 large double spread copperplate maps. The very detailed maps are to a scale of about eight miles to the inch. The large boards are rather worn and detached and there is no spine. The maps and the holding sheets are yellowed with age as expected after two hundred years. Sheets show signs of use, have damaged edges, and have various spots, and the a pink image has transfered across on some sheets. The cartography covers central Europe from Denmark to Sicily and Burgundy to Hungary , and was printed early in the war with Napoleon covering many contested areas. There is an ‘explanation’ on plate 10 which identifies cities, convents, forts and battle sites. The major political divisions have different outlines and six different colours are suggested for the six major powers of the time. Packing and postage: The packed weight of the atlas will be 7.5 kg. and will sent using Parcelforce Worldwide. Insurance cover is not available on items over 100 years old. Payments: Overseas payments must be via Paypal and delivery to a Paypal address. Returns policy: I aim to describe each item as accurately as possible. The photographs show the atlas in detail but please contact me if you require further information. Returns are accepted from the UK and EU countries and the winning bid price refunded. International returns outside of the EU are not accepted because of the extra costs involved with Custom duty charges.
