We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally large number of music boxes and other very nice collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our other items !I had hoped to eventually find time to do whatever is needed on this clock but I simply do not have the time these days; wish I did. This is a spectacular clock and absolutely gorgeous on display! It does work and cuckoos well too for hours on end but eventually stops; not sure why but it's well worth it to have it repaired, repair it yourself, or leave it the way it is...it is a breathtaking clock! It appears to be lightly used and beautifully carved. This is an 8 day hunter cuckoo clock that was created in the Black Forest about 40 years ago in what was then, "West Germany" by Emil Schmeckenbecher, one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world! The Schmeckenbecher name does not appear on the movement but this is one of Emil's clocks; no doubt about it. It is a very large clock measuring about 24" high (from the tip of the antlers to the bottom of the game bag, not counting the weights or pendulum), about 9" at its deepest point, and about 17" across the top. The clock is beautifully made, has a nice walnut finish, and is carved from cured and aged Linden wood that is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The case is adorned with 12, large, carved wooden oak leaves on the front that are exceptional, deep, intricate, and wavy. Another oak leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. There is a large carved game bird mounted to the left side of the case and an equally impressive large carved wooden rabbit to the right. There is a wooden game bag with straps near the bottom in front and two carved wooden birds are attached to it. I don't recall ever seeing this design before. The clock features a gorgeous, carved top with a large, finely-carved deer head on the very top complete with antlers. I don't think the antlers are wooden but they certainly look real. The top is a separate piece that is attached to the case with the old clamp, hook and eye system. There is a round wooden mountain horn complete with mouthpiece and horn encircling the dial. The dial itself has a black backdrop and features large, easy to read, raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. The clock has a fitted wood back and is secured with two metal latches. The door easily removes to allow access to the weight driven, "Regula" mechanical movement inside the case. Regula makes the best movements and Emil features this movement in all of his high end clocks. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall bellow tubes are in good shape and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The wooden bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreating to the safe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here and keeps good time but as I said earlier, it does need adjustments or service to work properly. This is an old and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service will be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its new home. Once repaired, remember to service the clock at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve this classic clock and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved, wooden oak leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.
