IN THIS AUCTION we are very pleased to offer for your consideration this beautiful large Gold Plated (Dorato) Italian Reliquary of Saint Agatha, Virgin. The Theca is splendid with its scalloped petal border measuring 2 5/8 inches (6.5 cm) long by 2 ¼ inches (5.5 cm) wide and ¾ inch (2 cm) deep. Inside the Reliquary the relic of Saint Agatha rests on a gold paper sunburst shape over a second oval with taupe petal shapes that mirror the Theca edge. When you remove the back you find the wax seal and threads intact. T is cotton padding in the theca to prevent the threads and paper backing from moving within. From our research we paraphrase: SAINT AGATHA was born in Prison in Sicily in either Catania or Palermo. Young and beautiful, Agatha lived a life consecrated to God. When Decius announced the edicts against Christians, the magistrate tried to profit by Agatha's sanctity. He planned to blackmail her into sex in exchange for not charging her. He handed her over to a brothel w she refused to accept customers. After rejecting the Magistrates advances, she was beaten, imprisoned, tortured, her breasts were crushed and cut off. One version says that Saint Peter healed her. She was imprisoned further, and then rolled on live coals. As she was near to death an earthquake struck. Agatha thanked God for an end to her pain, and died a martyr in 250. Legend says that carrying her veil in procession, taken from her tomb in Catania has averted eruptions of Mount Etna. She is Patron Saint (among others) for Sicily, Breast Cancer, and Earthquakes. This item is allowed as it contains no human remains.
