HELLER BLACKSMITHING HAMMER
Large Heller rounding or turning hammer in fair used condition. One flat face and one super-domed round face. Overall length 15 3/4", head is 4 1/4" long and nearly 1 7/8" across at the faces. Entire tool weighs 3 pounds and 3 ounces. Marking is worn away and partial. What remains is hard to make out - the letter R , over I imagine a tail of a horse, over BROS CO .
Found this at an antique shop - head was coated with the dreaded thick coating of dark brown varnish. Despite the varnish and the huge price, I knew that with the uncommon shape and size, someone could make great use of this tool - so it is!
To see what the head looks like, I wiped-off the varnish with lacquer thinner to reveal somewhat overcleaned metal. Tool collectors like to see dark patina, many blacksmiths like to see these polished to a beautiful new appearance - this one is somew in-between. Could be cleaned-up some more, but ready-to-use as it stands.
A bit on the shiny side, dings, dents, shallow pitting throughout, with one big chipped area on the edge of the flat face. Faces are in good overall condition and the round face has a an unusually big radius. Old replacement handle is solid and very tight.
