13th Century Original Medieval Illuminated Bible Leaf, France, c. 1247 AD IM-9772: A lovely original leaf from a medieval manuscript folio Bible with illuminations from the Johannes Grusch Workshop. The Bible was formerly owned by the Abbey of Sainte-Genevieve in Paris. Latin gothic script, hand-written in brown ink, on animal vellum. Rubricated chapter numbers, initials and marginalia in red and blue. 50 lines of text in double columns. THREE MULTI-LINE ILLUMINATED INITIALS ALTERNATING IN BLUE WITH INTRICATE RED SCROLLWORK AND RED WITH INTRICATE BLUE SCROLLWORK –EXTENDING ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE TEXT. Line two begins Luke 13:30 - 16:5: “Et ecce...” (And behold, they are last that shall be first; and they are first that shall be last ...Jerusalem...You shall not see me till the time come, when you shall say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord...The son said to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, I am not now worthy to be called thy son...It was fit that we should make merry and be glad, for this thy brother was dead and is come to life again; he was lost, and is found...). The book from which this leaf came was scribed and illuminated in Paris, France, c. 1247 AD. The large size of the page is unusual in 13th century Bible production! The book from which this leaf came was a very high-quality production. The calligraphy is excellent, and the vellum is of the finest style, extremely thin and very white. This is an original, not a reproduction and the leaf is very clean and fresh. The condition is as shown in the photos. Small holes scattered across the lower margin. The leaf measures 290 x 190 mm (11 1/2 x 7 1/2”). This leaf comes with a Certificate of Authenticity . We prefer For international purchase we accept only PayPal .
