Large Japanese Buddhist Statue of Amida Nyorai (Buddha) I have decided to list this very nice large statue of Amida Nyorai (The Buddha of Infinite light). This wonderful Lacquer and gilt over wood standing depiction of Amida Nyorai has gyokugan (inset crystal/glass) eyes, and dates back to the Edo-Period (1603-1867). This statue was carved using the yosegi zukuri (hollow joined block) method, which involved the joining of multiple hollow blocks of hinoke (Japanese Cypress) together in order to form the whole, but still hollow, statue. This method helped to prevent splitting, while also creating an extremely lightweight statue. It also made it possible for sacred texts and objects to be placed inside of the statues for religious purposes. The 8 tiered wooden base and mandorla are both very impressive as well. The Buddha is performing the Raigo-in mudra (hand position), which represents reasoning, teaching, and discussion. This statue is in excellent condition, with much of its original gilt finish remaining. The hands, feet, and all fingers are intact and in good stable condition. T is only some minor wear and loss (most notably to a couple of the lotus leaves on the base) to the statue. In addition to the Buddha image, the base and mandorla are also in good working order.
